Been out picking sloes, and, to a lesser extent, blackberries this morning. Best sloe crop I've seen for years - hanging like grapes.Picked enough to keep us in sloe gin for another year or so. Whilst out we took the photoes at Bildeston Church. Anone care to guess what they are ?

Hi Carl. You are, of course, right about the first photo. It's a magnificent wasps' nest. What about the second photo, taken looking up into the roof of the porch ?
I was completely stymied by the first - looks like a piece of armour - aptly.

Hello Pat. Yes, looks a bit like a slightly globose breastplate doesn't it? Almost makes me think the wasps have designed their home to blend in with the colour and style of its surroundings.
Hello again Carl. Yes, again you're quite right. There are a couple of swallows' nests in the porch rafters. Not Martins, they continue to build on the outside of buildings.
I leave sloes rather later, until October. Mind you, sometimes that makes me too late, others have got there first. I've got a fair bit left from last year though, so I may not make any sloe gin this year.
Hello Zoe. Yes, normally so do we -well, September at any rate.In fact we went out looking for blackberries this morning. Found about enough for one pie. But found that the sloes in our usual picking spots were well ahead of their usual time - everything ripened early this year, so picked the usual amount. Picked (in the other sense)over them this evening, and found them fully mature. They're in the freezer now for a few days - to break the skins before their immersion. It might be a good idea to have a look at the sloes in your area. I think you'll be surprised.
