Is there a pile of old pennies on the shelf by the telphone? The last time I used one of those in a desolate corner of leicestershire, long after decimalization, the coin drawer was unlocked and the general public could make free calls by 'recycling' the available pennies! It was cheaper than modernizing the kiosk in an area of very low usage.
