This is Avebury. In this area are Stonhenge, Avebury, Silbury Hill, and everywhere you look are tumuli, barows, stone avenues and early monuments to ?????????????????
All we know of these highly organised and civilised people is what they have left behind them for us to see, and that's plenty. And we still know almost nothing of them, or why they did the remarkable things they did.

I suspect the thinking behind the stone arrays went along the lines of...
Ey-up Charlie, that's another ice-age over, and look at the mess the ice-giants have left behind! Rocks and boulders and morraines all over the show. I suppose it would be impolite not to tidy up... and if we're clever about it, the ice-giants might suspect we're stronger than them and not come back in a hurry! Hows about if we stand them up in pretty patterns and clusters, as if we were playing Chess or Morrels?... no wait a minute, let's set them out like they were astronomical markers, all scientific like? That would worry the Ice-giants even more. They'd think we were bigger and stronger than them and cleverer too... Nay, nay lad! Don't go carrying them two at a time now... or you'll scare me away too!
