His Worship the Mayor inspecting the troops. Probably wouldn't have gone to see it if Matthew hadn't been with us, but as he has just got his Sergeant's stripes in the Army Cadets, he felt he aught to go, so we accompanied him. Worth going - moving and colourful occasion.

Hasn't our government been poking about in Afghanistan since Victoria was wed to Albert?
Was it about control of the silk routes... or something more sinister, clandestine and infamously political like control of the Poppy harvest so cheap opium could be exchanged for valuable oriental textile and porcelain products? Damned if I like the idea of war, and I abhor politics but we do seem good at 'em!
